About

I'm Calvin van der Merwe — a South African birder and photographer now based in Calgary, Alberta. I grew up chasing new habitats and early morning light across the Southern African wilderness. These days I split my time between the Canadian Rockies, Prairies, Parkland, and Boreal Forest locally, and looking for adventures abroad. 🌳🦉🐾

When I'm not behind a lens I'm usually on a trail, chasing a sunrise or a sunset, flying down a ski slope, or organising a braai. Hiking, hitchhiking, and skiing are how I get into the country; photography and birding are the reasons I stay out longer than I meant to. This site is where I keep the shots worth coming back to.
